1st and 2nd Grade
At King of Kings Lutheran School, our 1st and 2nd-grade curriculum is thoughtfully designed to foster growth across academic, social, and spiritual dimensions. Building on foundational skills, students are introduced to more complex concepts in core subjects like reading, math, and science, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving. Beyond academics, our program emphasizes character development, teamwork, and faith-based learning, equipping students with the tools to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
Curriculum
1st Grade
Math & Science
In our math classes, using the Sadlier-Oxford Math curriculum, students engage in a comprehensive learning experience that includes mastering addition and subtraction, collecting data to create graphs, exploring geometry and measurement through hands-on activities, and understanding concepts of time and money. Students learn through a variety of methods—independent, partner, and group work.
FOSS – In our three modules, students discover the fascinating worlds of insects and plants, as well as the properties of pebbles, sand, silt, solids, and liquids. This hands-on learning experience fosters curiosity and a deeper understanding of the natural world around them.
Reading, English & Handwriting
In our reading classes, we utilize the Superkids curriculum to enhance students’ decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills, with a strong emphasis on phonics. Additionally, the curriculum integrates spelling and handwriting, ensuring a well-rounded approach to literacy development.
Shurley English – In our language curriculum, students develop a robust understanding of grammar and writing through the study of various parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, and adjectives, along with essential writing skills. This foundational knowledge equips them to communicate effectively and enhances their overall literacy skills.
In our writing classes, students concentrate on developing sentence structure, enhancing their stories with details, practicing directional writing, and mastering correct punctuation and spelling. They also collaborate on a group research project, culminating in the creation of a nonfiction book about animals, which fosters both creativity and critical thinking skills.
Arts, Music & Social Studies
In our art classes, students explore a wide range of mediums—including paint, oil pastels, watercolor, clay, and drawing—through diverse art projects. Some activities are open-ended to foster creativity, while others provide step-by-step guidance to help develop their artistic skills.
Music in 1st and 2nd grade at King of Kings takes students further into understanding rhythm and pitch. First graders continue developing their musical literacy with steady beat, pitch relations, and stick notation. In 2nd grade, students progress to reading and practicing rhythms and pitches on the staff, creating a more formal understanding of music. Both grades participate in at least two concerts each year, showcasing their growing skills and love for music. The Class Notes Concerts enhance their experience with diverse, professional musicians.
In our social studies classes, students explore the differences between life long ago and today, while developing essential map skills and understanding key concepts of government, history, and economics. They demonstrate their learning through diverse activities that encourage critical thinking and engagement with the material.
Religion, Health & PE
In our religion classes, students delve deeper into specific Bible stories, exploring how the lessons apply to their lives today while learning about Christ’s never ending love and forgiveness. Each week, they also recite memory work, reinforcing their understanding and connection to their faith across all subjects.
In our health classes, students explore essential topics related to maintaining a healthy body, including understanding the heart, muscles, and bones, as well as the importance of nutrition and emotional well-being. They also learn strategies for building healthy friendships and managing their emotions, promoting a holistic approach to personal health.
In our PE classes, students focus on developing large motor skills through locomotor movements and activities with manipulatives, such as soccer, basketball, and throwing/catching exercises, as well as rhythmic movement. They also learn the importance of teamwork, fostering collaboration and sportsmanship as they engage in various physical activities.
2nd Grade
Math, Science & Technology
Sadlier-Oxford Progress in Mathematics – In second grade, students build a strong mathematical foundation through a comprehensive exploration of key concepts, including place value, addition and subtraction, and basic geometry. This diverse curriculum not only enhances their computational skills but also prepares them for more advanced topics in the future.

In second grade technology class, we embark on an exciting journey with Chromebooks, mastering tools like Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drawing. These foundational skills not only enhance our digital literacy but also empower us to communicate and express our ideas creatively through technology. Through mastering correct typing with an online program and coding with robotic mice, students build essential skills that enhance their digital fluency and problem-solving abilities.

Zaner-Bloser Superkids – Through an emphasis on spelling rules and phonics, along with engaging book clubs and magazine explorations, students enhance their reading and comprehension skills. Harcourt Social Studies People We Know – We learn about the government structure and services, map skills, land resources and how people use them, early American events, cultures of our country, producers and consumers, goods and services, the history of local Native American. In our studies, we explore how the government works, map skills, and the use of land resources, along with important events and cultures in America. This knowledge helps students understand the roles of producers and consumers in their communities and the economy.
Religion, Health & PE
Enduring Faith from Concordia Publishing House – In second grade, we explore significant events from the Old and New Testaments, paying special attention to the meaningful seasons of Advent, Lent, Christmas, and Easter as well as Martin Luther and the Reformation. This foundational knowledge helps us appreciate the rich traditions and stories that shape our faith.
McGraw-Hill Health and Wellness – Through our lessons, students explore feelings, relationships, and the importance of health and safety, including nutrition and hygiene. This holistic approach not only promotes personal well-being but also encourages responsibility for the environment and community health.
