3rd and 4th Grade
At King of Kings School, our 3rd and 4th-grade curriculum is thoughtfully designed to foster growth across academic, social, and spiritual dimensions. Building on foundational skills, students are introduced to more complex concepts in core subjects like reading, math, and science, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving. Beyond academics, our program emphasizes character development, teamwork, and faith-based learning, equipping students with the tools to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Curriculum
3rd Grade
Math, Science & Technology
Using step-by-step instruction, math is taught in a way to help support higher level thinking while fostering the development of practical skills and strategic thinking. Our curriculum, Progress in Mathematics, stretches the students as they begin to expand on prior knowledge and learn brand new concepts, such as: multiplication, division, fractions, statistics, probability, and problem solving.
Third grade learns about three different main units – water/climate, structures of life, and motion and matter. FOSS – Next Generation encourages the students to use hands-on methods to dive deeper into physical, earth, and life science.
In third grade, students will strengthen their typing skills, begin to learn how to effectively research, and learn the many uses of Google applications.
Reading, English & Spelling
Read Side by Side truly helps students to fall in love with reading. Using novels students love, third graders begin that transition from learning to reading to reading to learn. We focus on skills like comprehension, inferring, character development, predicting, sympathizing with characters, etc.
We continue to build off of what is taught in previous grades in Shurley English using a lot of repetition and rhythm to help retain the classifications of words and sentences. This helps to strengthen their ability to write strong sentences in not only their daily work, but in the way they speak as well.
Teaching phonetics and the rules of the English language help to encourage students to not only memorize how to spell, but to use background knowledge to determine the spelling of any unknown words.
Handwriting, Arts & Social Studies
All third grade students learn cursive for the first time using Handwriting Without Tears.
Students use different forms of media to draw and paint in ways that help their creativity flourish.
Focusing on the prospective idea of community, students learn about what it means to be a part of a community, different communities around the world, the history of communities, and much more.
Music, Religion, Health & PE
In 3rd and 4th grades, students at King of Kings deepen their understanding of music fundamentals. Third graders learn treble staff note names through stories, games, and rote learning, leading to the introduction of recorders during the second trimester. Fourth graders continue their recorder journey in the first trimester before transitioning to bass clef notes and exploring band instruments. These grades perform in at least two concerts annually, celebrating their musical growth. Through Class Notes Concerts, students also gain exposure to diverse musical experiences and styles.
Studying both the Old and New Testaments, students will better their understanding of the Bible and how vast God’s love is. They will, also, learn how to live out a Christian life.
Focusing on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health, students will learn how to live a healthy lifestyle.
In our PE classes, students focus on developing large motor skills through locomotor movements, exercises, and activities with manipulatives. Students will start to use those movements and apply them to sports, such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, football, pickleball, track & field, and floor hockey. Learning the importance of teamwork and modeling good sportsmanship is a focus during various activities and weekly bible verses.
