Kindergarten
At King of Kings Lutheran School, our kindergarten curriculum is carefully crafted to nurture growth in academic, creative, and spiritual realms. Rooted in foundational skills, students are introduced to engaging lessons in core subjects like math, reading, writing, and science, fostering curiosity and critical thinking. Enrichment opportunities in handwriting, art, music, and health encourage self-expression, creativity, and well-being, while social studies and religion promote character development, teamwork, and faith-based values. With dedicated time for free choice, students develop independence and a love for learning in a supportive and joyful environment, preparing them for success inside and outside the classroom.
Curriculum
Kindergarten
Reading & Writing
Students in kindergarten will learn beginning reading skills such as letter and sound recognition, high-frequency words, phonemic awareness, C-V-C words, and word families. Beginning reading skills are introduced and students are given opportunities to practice these skills through small reading groups, word family activities, and manipulatives. Kindergarten students will also participate in an interactive storytime hearing a variety of literature. The students will learn to predict, retell the story, and identify the characters and setting which help develop comprehension skills and critical thinking.
Students will explore writing through activities, such as drawing, forming simple sentences, and journaling. As the year progresses, students begin to write on their own using phonetic spelling as well as memorizing high-frequency words. The goal is to foster creativity, build confidence, and set the stage for more advanced writing skills.
Math & Science
Students will gain mathematical knowledge and skills through hands-on activities by using the Sadlier-Oxford Math curriculum, manipulatives, and written work. Students will focus on numeral identification, counting, sorting and classifying, shape identifying, estimating, spatial concepts, patterns, addition and subtraction, measurement, tim,e and counting of coins. Students engage in learning using different approaches, including working independently, with a partner, or in groups.
Students in Kindergarten and first grade will explore God’s world around them through the study of Physical, Life, and Earth science. They will focus on the topics of air, weather, plants, animals, sound & light, and materials & motion. These topics are further investigated through hands-on experiments, videos, and books from parts of the FOSS Science curriculum.
Social Studies & Religion
Students explore how to be good citizens, respect others, follow rules, and contribute to their communities. They learn about important USA symbols and roles of the president. The curriculum also includes understanding the concept of communities and the jobs of community helpers. Students begin to recognize maps, continents, and countries, helping them understand the world around them. Additionally, students learn simple economic concepts, such as needs versus wants and the value of saving and sharing, building a foundation for lifelong learning.
Students will explore Bible stories from the Old and New Testament, discovering how the lessons relate to their lives today while deepening their understanding of Christ’s boundless love and forgiveness. Each week, they will learn and recite a Bible verse, building a spiritual foundation that can guide them throughout their lives. The curriculum used is Enduring Faith from Concordia Publishing House.
Art, Music & Handwriting
In Kindergarten art, students explore their creativity through hands-on activities that develop fine motor skills and self-expression. The curriculum introduces foundational art concepts such as color, shape, line, texture, and pattern. Children engage in projects using a variety of materials like crayons, paint, watercolors, oil pastels, and clay, which help them learn to create and experiment.
Kindergarten students at King of Kings build on foundational music skills with activities that strengthen their sense of steady beat and pitch relations. Using fun, interactive techniques, they explore solfege and stick notation, forming a strong base for future music education. Music is introduced as a joyful and creative experience, setting the stage for their ongoing musical journey. Students also have the unique opportunity to enjoy live performances by visiting musicians through our Class Notes Concerts program.
Handwriting instruction focuses on proper pencil grip, letter formation, and spacing. Both uppercase and lowercase letters are practiced to build fine motor skills while using Handwriting Without Tears curriculum.
Health & Free Choice
Students in Kindergarten will learn basic principles for living a healthy lifestyle. They will learn about body systems, dental hygiene, emotional health, nutrition and exercise, and the importance of safety. They will recognize that our bodies are a gift from God that need to be cared for by making healthy choices.
Free Choice is a vital part of the kindergarten curriculum that provides children the opportunity to explore, learn, and develop essential skills in an unstructured and self-directed way. This time is characterized by children choosing from various activities or centers that are designed to foster creativity, social skills, problem-solving, and independence.
