Middle School: Grades 5-8
The King of Kings Lutheran school curriculum has intentionally been built to prepare students academically and spiritually over the course of their years in attendance. Our children will be prepared for their next grade level due to the education they receive within our academic system. We use curriculum materials, both Christian and secular, from a variety of publishers that offer the best educational opportunities. The curriculum offered at King Kings in general school subjects is similar to that of most grade schools.
Curriculum
Grades 5-8
Religion
Students will continue to study the Bible through a thought-provoking workbook and collaborative projects. Students will also learn about the history of the Christian church and Christian apologetics. Students are invited to ask meaningful questions about their faith, encouraging deeper exploration of how we can trust and understand God’s Word. Students will continue to strengthen their knowledge and memory of key Scripture, the Ten Commandments, and important parts of Luther’s Small Catechism, building a solid foundation for their Christian faith and understanding.
Language Arts
Through a range of short stories, articles, and novels, students will enhance their literacy skills in both fiction and nonfiction. They will also work on expanding their vocabulary by exploring Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Additionally, students will strengthen their grammar knowledge by studying parts of speech and sentence structure, with targeted practice that will result in a variety of written compositions as they prepare for high school.
Social Studies
Understanding the world is knowing and appreciating the delicate balance between the past, present, and future. That often starts locally and moves to the global and requires a careful deconstruction of historical events. 5th Grade focuses on US History from the native tribes and regions, early explorers, and the foundations of the United States through the Revolutionary War. 6th Grade begins in Minnesota and studies the history of our state. Students learn how the history, geography, society, and culture of Minnesota have shaped this state. Students will also attend three field trips through the Minnesota Historical Society to help bring their learning to life. 7th Grade dives back into the US History. Students learn about the early 1800s by exploring America’s conflicts with Mexico and its aftermath that eventually led to America’s Westward Expansion. Learning about the expansion and other factors that lead to the American Civil War, the Industrial Age, the Great War, and even its successor, World War II. 8th Grade social studies is geography. Students explore regions throughout the world focusing on three major themes (physical geography, history, and life in the region).
Mathematics
At King of Kings, we take a distinctive approach to teaching mathematics by delivering it simultaneously across the entire school. This method enables students to be placed in the math level that suits them best, allowing them to move one level to a different classroom for math without missing any content in their current classroom. By addressing the learning gap within each classroom, we create an environment where students can learn at a pace and level that aligns with their individual needs.
Our curriculum, Progress in Mathematics, stretches the students as they begin to expand on prior knowledge and learn brand-new concepts while fostering the development of practical skills and strategic thinking.
5th Grade: The main concepts are multiplication, division, fractions, statistics, probability, and problem-solving. Math is taught by another teacher in their classroom as a way to help prepare them to have a moving schedule in middle school and learn to be prepared and organized.
6th Grade: Students expand their math skills by learning how to solve and interpret equations and inequalities that represent real-world situations. They will work with a variety of numbers, including decimals, fractions, percents, and integers. The course will also focus on geometry, where students will explore the perimeter, area, and volume of different two- and three-dimensional shapes.
In 7th and 8th grade, students are enrolled in pre-algebra or algebra. The emphasis in these grades is to ensure they have a strong foundation in math skills before transitioning to high school. Advanced students in 8th grade are eligible to take geometry at Concordia Academy.
Physical Education
Middle School PE classes begin to focus on understanding physical movement and exercises while developing individual healthy lifestyles. Students will learn the components of physical fitness and how to apply them in their daily lives. Sports-specific skills and rules are taught in all of the sports units, such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, football, softball, pickleball, track & field, and floor hockey. Learning the importance of teamwork and modeling good sportsmanship is the main focus during all activities, with weekly bible verses supporting each unit. In the spring, all students will participate in a one-day Lutheran school softball tournament and track & field day, supporting each other as they compete against other schools.
Science
Throughout 5-8 grade, students will explore key concepts in earth science, solar systems, life science, physical science, and chemistry. These classes emphasize the scientific method and encourage critical thinking as students investigate the different aspects of the scientific realm through a Christian lens. The students maintain an interactive notebook to track observations, record data, and reflect on their learning. They will gain a greater appreciation for the wonder and complexity of God’s creation, deepening their ability to approach the world with curiosity, awe, and a sense of responsibility. We use the FOSS – Next Generation curriculum that encourages students to use hands-on methods to dive deeper into their discoveries.
Art
Students participate in a variety of art projects to explore the elements and principles of design. Students develop their skills in drawing, shading, painting, and sculpting pieces that are inspired by artists, the natural world, and their own imaginations. As they experiment with different mediums and techniques, students will be encouraged to express their creativity while building a strong foundation in artistic concepts.
Health
Middle school health class focuses on the four pillars of a healthy lifestyle: physical, mental/emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Rooted in the belief that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) and our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16), students explore these concepts through weekly lessons, thought-provoking discussions, and reflections on how to apply them to their lives. Students will be confident in their ability to honor God with their well-being and be empowered to turn to Him for guidance and strength in all aspects of life.
Outdoor Education
Discovering God’s creation firsthand is one of the most powerful ways to deepen understanding and appreciation for the world around us. Students in grades 5-8 experience four diverse camps, where they gain a greater sense of stewardship and respect for the world around them, all while building lasting memories and a stronger sense of community.
Students in grades 5 and 6 will spend three days and two nights alternating each year between Camp Omega in Waterville, MN, and Camp Victory in Zumbro Falls, MN, exploring nature and developing essential outdoor skills. In grades 7 and 8, the adventure continues with a five-day, four-night trip to Camp Luther in Three Lakes, WI, or Camp Widjiwagan in Ely, MN. Each camp offers unique opportunities to learn about God’s creation and build teamwork, leadership, and practical survival skills.
Music
The Music Department for grades 5–8 at King of Kings offers opportunities to apply musical knowledge through dynamic ensembles. Students can join Beginning Band (grade 5), Advanced Band (grades 6–8), Beginning Choir (grades 5–6), and Advanced Choir (grades 7–8). These ensembles perform in two school concerts each year, with select groups participating in 1–2 additional run-out performances, encouraging students to use music to inspire and uplift others. The Class Notes Concerts continue to enrich their musical journey with exposure to professional musicians and diverse styles.
Technology
Our middle school technology program builds skills progressively, starting with foundational tools and expanding to more advanced concepts. In the younger grades, students focus on mastering the King of Kings Google Suite and applying it to various projects. They also explore music mixing, videography, photography, robot programming, and learn a programming language. As students move into the older grades, they work with remote control vehicles, experiment with hologram projection, create stop-motion films, and produce, film, and edit school newscasts, developing both technical and creative expertise.
